Building an eCommerce Website
The post Building an eCommerce Website appeared first on HostGator Blog . It’s easier than ever to build your own eCommerce website and start selling products online. With the help of select website building tools you can have your site online in a day’s work. Of course, coming up with your product idea, along with product sourcing and creation will take longer, but the actual website building process can be streamlined. Plus, eCommerce stores are only primed to grow. By building your very own store now you can take advantage of this trend well into the future. Even if you’ve never built a website before, you can create your very own eCommerce store with ease. By the end of this post you’ll know how to find a good product and niche for your store, how to build out your site, and the approaches you can take to generate sales. Before You Build Out Your Store Before you start the process of building out your eCommerce store there are some foundational things you’re going to need to do first. The first of which is securing your domain name and web hosting services.Without these, there’s no way to actually have a live eCommerce website. There are dozens of different providers and services you can use to secure a domain name and hosting, and you can either purchase them together or separately. If this is your first time building a website, then the easiest course of action will be purchasing them together from the same provider. This will minimize the number of technical tasks you need to complete and speed up the process of getting your site online. If you’re looking for the fastest and most beginner friendly way to secure a domain name and hosting, then consider purchasing them both right here at HostGator. Just select your web hosting package and add a domain name to your order before you check out. You might not be ready to name your store and purchase a domain name just yet, so feel free to return to this section later once you’ve come up with the perfect domain name for your business. What You Need to Build an eCommerce Website Building an eCommerce website will be a little different than creating a standard website or starting a blog . Beyond securing a domain name and hosting you’ll also need to consider tools and software for processing payments, along with actually creating and manufacturing your products. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s required to build a website from scratch for an eCommerce store: A domain A hosting provider An integrated payment processor A platform or tool to build your store Initial capital to create your products Packaging for product shipping When you’re creating an eCommerce store there will be some initial capital that you’ll need to invest. Building an eCommerce Website the Easy Way Building an eCommerce website is similar to the process of building any other website, except you’re selling physical products. This means there will be greater work upfront to help ensure the success of your website. Here’s the process of discovering your market, finding out what you’re going to sell, and finally building out your store. 1. Market Research and Finding Your Niche To start an eCommerce store you’re going to need a physical product to sell. But, it would be a heartbreaking experience to go through the process of building out a store only to find out that no one wants to buy what you’re selling. To avoid this fate you’ll want to spend time upfront finding the right market and products to sell. You might already know exactly what you want to sell, but if not, no worries, this post will walk you through the process of market research . Ideally, what you want is to uncover a pressing need in the marketplace and fill it with your product. Look for Trending Products One way to ensure that you’ll start selling products right out of the gate is to align yourself with products that are currently trending. By getting into a trending niche at the right time, you can ride the wave in the short-term and long-term. However, you don’t want to hop into a trending market when it’s on the decline. Instead, you want to find a product or a niche for products that are growing in popularity. There are tons of different tools you can use to spot trending products and niches, but here are some of the most common. Google Trends : This Google tool allows you to look into the past and future of certain product keywords. By using the data this tool provides you’ll be able to see if a market is growing or waning in popularity. TrendHunter : This site showcases a ton of different niches and products that are currently trending across the globe. Plus, there’s a nifty filter that lets you sort by different industries. Instagram Influencers: If you spend any time on Instagram then you probably follow a few influencers who regularly promote certain products. The chances are pretty high that the products they promote tend to sell well and can suggest a viable niche. Align With Your Passion Hopefully, by exploring the resources above you have a handful of products or potential niches you could go into. To narrow down that list even further we’re going to do some self-evaluation. After all, it’s going to be hard to sustain momentum with your store if you don’t actually care about what you’re selling. Spend some time with the following questions to determine if you have what it takes to sustain yourself in the niche: Do you care about the market you’ve chosen? Do you have any pre-existing knowledge you can rely on? Can you see yourself working in this space for 5 years or more? Do you care about the people that you’re serving? Explore What’s Currently Selling By now you should have narrowed down your list of potential products and niches to a group you actually care about. Now, we’re going to take this one step further and validate our ideas in the marketplace. The most effective ways to do this are using the Amazon product marketplace and a keyword research tool. First, head over to the Amazon bestseller list in the product category of your choice (link). Then, spend some time digging through the products to see what kinds of things people are actually buying. Look for product multiples and dig through the reviews to see if there are any glaring issues with the existing products. Second, head over to the tool Ubersuggest . This is a free keyword research tool that’ll give you tons of actionable keyword data. Then, all you have to do is input your target keyword and you’ll receive a list of related keywords and their overall search volume. This will help you determine the overall size of the market and maybe even give you a few ideas of products you can sell. 2. Getting Ready to Sell Before you settle on the product you want to sell there are a few more considerations you’ll want to take into account. First, you’ll want to make sure the product is light enough that it’s easy to ship. During the early days of your eCommerce store, you’ll be handling most of the packaging and shipping yourself. This will not only make your life easier, but you’ll be able to maintain better product margins, which can be crucial in the early days of your store. The last thing that needs to be considered in regards to your product is prototyping. With this approach, you’re not looking to create the perfect product the first time around. Instead, you’ll be trying to create an initial product and then iterate and improve based upon product feedback. This will help you get to market faster and build a better product over time. 3. Choosing Your Platform If you haven’t secured your domain name and hosting yet, now would be the time to do it. The easiest approach would be to pick up both right here at HostGator . When the time comes to choose the platform for your eCommerce store you’re going to have a lot of different options at your disposal. There’s all-in-one platforms, website builders, CMS like WordPress, and more. One of the easiest options is using a website builder to set up an online store. 4. Building Your Store Below you’ll learn the basics of building an eCommerce website with the HostGator website builder. For full eCommerce functionality, select the eCommerce plan. This will give you options like inventory management, shopping cart, coupon codes, and additional online payment methods for eCommerce sites. With the builder up and running the next thing to do is select your website template. From the ‘Category’ option select ‘Online Store’ and spend some time browsing through the templates until you find one that you want to act as the foundation for your site. Once you’ve found a suitable template hover over it and click ‘Select’. On the next page, you’ll be able to edit your website. Just click on any existing element of your site and a drop-down list of options will come up that shows you the changes you can make. If you want to design your storefront, then click on Pages> Store from the left-hand menu. To add products to your store, configure your shopping cart, and more, you’ll need to upgrade your service. So click on the blue ‘Upgrade’ button in the upper right-hand corner. Or navigate to Store> Upgrade Now . 5. Launching Your Store and Selling Products If you’ve done everything above, then congratulations, you’ve put in a ton of work and you’re just about ready to launch your store. However, it’s important not to launch your store before it’s fully polished. After all, you only have one chance to make a first impression. Spend some time double-checking every page on your site for typos, broken links, or other things that don’t work. You’ll also want to run through a few sample purchases to make sure the checkout process works smoothly as well. Once you’re satisfied with your virtual storefront, it’s time to launch your store and start selling products ! Marketing Your eCommerce Website Now, if you don’t have any existing social media channels for your business, or a list to promote your store too, you probably won’t get much traffic to start. What you need to do is invest in marketing your eCommerce store to the world. Here are a few of the most common eCommerce marketing methods: 1. Content Marketing With an eCommerce store, you have a multitude of opportunities to create content. Whether you’re creating educational content that’s geared towards your selection of products. Or, you’re creating content that’s geared towards picking up backlinks or social media shares. Often, content marketing won’t give you immediate results, but instead, it’s something that can provide you with traffic over the long-term. Here are a few great resources on building a content marketing strategy from scratch: How to Make eCommerce Content Marketing Work for You Top 5 Tips for a Successful Blog Content Marketing Strategy 2. Social Media Marketing Social media can be a great way to increase brand awareness while driving traffic back to your eCommerce site. There are a lot of social media networks out there, but the ones you’ll probably find the most value in are Instagram and Pinterest. Both of these are more image-driven platforms, so they align well with selling products. Instagram will give you a way to showcase your product itself, along with how it’s commonly used. While Pinterest gives you the opportunity to create and share content that’s related to your niche and drive targeted traffic back to your site. 3. Influencer Marketing Influencer marketing has been used to build some wildly successful eCommerce stores. If you’re not familiar, it’s the process of reaching out to influencers on Instagram and having them promote your brand and products to their audience. You have the option of doing paid shoutouts, but you might also be able to find accounts who will mention your product for free in exchange for your product. How to Choose Your Web Design Template: 5 Key Factors to Consider
The post How to Choose Your Web Design Template: 5 Key Factors to Consider appeared first on HostGator Blog . The look and feel of your website matters. It can either attract new customers or repel them in the opposite direction. Website builders make it easier to design with drag-and-drop templates. But all templates aren’t created equal. You need a specific design that fits your brand personality, welcomes visitors, and offers good functionality. 5 Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Web Design Template It’s your turn to create a jaw-dropping website. Below are 5 factors to consider when choosing a web design template that follows design best practices . 1. Header Design The header is the first part of the website your visitors see. Your primary goal is to welcome your audience with open arms and spark their curiosity to browse around. Most header designs include the brand’s logo coupled with an engaging image. The text usually offers context and adds a simple call to action. Your site’s header will rely on how complex or easy it is to explain your brand. Brenda Barron , an instructor for Tuts+, offers more insight: “Using a captivating image to create an amazing visual experience works well for businesses such as hotels, restaurants, or spas. If on the other hand, your type of business might be hard to explain with image only, you should choose a header design that incorporates an image with a text overlay.” ClassPass , a health club aggregator, uses a header image to display its business model. The straightforward copy gives the company’s description with two call-to-action buttons . First impressions hold significance online. Choose a web design template that showcases your brand in a positive light. 2. Navigation Design When you enter a brick-and-mortar store, it’s fairly easy to locate items. They have signs labeling specific aisles, a designated area for customer service, and even a floating store clerk to assist you. Similarly, it’s important to recreate that shopping experience online. The menu bar acts as a roadmap, guiding your visitors to certain pages on your site. It should be readable with a plain background color and simple fonts. The key is not to overwhelm your consumers. An overcrowded menu isn’t visually pleasing, and it can complicate the visitor’s experience. You’ll also want to create a hierarchy, or architecture , for your pages. For the layout, place the most important pages on the left. You can use a different color or add a familiar symbol to underline critical details. In the example below, Havertys provides an easy-to-access menu for customers to learn about its products. The brand also gives visitors options to receive free design help. Navigation design gives your visitors a clear direction on what to do next. Be their personal guide through the online experience. 3. Functionality It’s not enough to have cool pictures and funky colors on your site. You need to give your site purpose by adding functionality. Start by deciding what you want visitors to achieve with your site. Do you want customers to purchase products? Do you want them to contact you at specific times? Your website’s goal will help you select the right template. If you want visitors to connect with you directly, you may need a live chat feature. If you want customers to shop, you will need an eCommerce store. Perry Lara , creative director at Viral Element, says: “Given that your website is your best salesperson, you should take the necessary steps to ensure your website functions properly before and after it’s launched. A poor functioning website can mean the difference between generating new leads and completely missing out on lead-generating opportunities.” SWANK blow dry bar offers its visitors the choice to book an appointment on its website. With this functionality, the brand streamlines the process of gaining a new customer. Functionality makes your website more than a pretty online space. A successful eCommerce web design template can transform a hesitant visitor into a loyal shopper. 4. Content Area Content plays an essential role in your website. The text and images fill out your design and inform your visitors about your products and services. Depending on your brand, your content area may include a blog, photo gallery, or a slideshow . Choose a content section that helps your visitors learn more about your value. However, don’t complicate your design with too many content areas. The clutter will confuse (or maybe annoy) visitors on where they should focus their attention. If they can’t decide what to do next, it’s likely they will just leave your site. Kitchen Konfidence exhibits a vivid content area with beautiful photos, concise descriptions, and direct call-to-action buttons. Also, there’s enough white space to not overwhelm visitors with loads of content. Your content area is a good place to experiment with how your brand presents information. For instance, you may use a fixed sidebar with your navigation menu, social media links, and contact details. Your web design template should tell a story. Be selective on what content areas you use. 5. Mobile Version According to Statista , “the number of mobile phone users is forecast to reach 4.68 billion in 2019.” This research means a potential increase in website engagement from consumers. Mobile users expect to get what they need quickly without any hassle. Jenny Gove , a UX Research Lead at Google, states: “Make it easy to get back to the home page. Users expect to go back to the homepage when they tap the logo in the top-left of a mobile page, and they become frustrated when it isn’t available or doesn’t work.” Plan for fewer words on your mobile site. The headlines should be short to fit the mobile screen. Also the content should be easy to skim. Bose’s mobile site highlights the essential details. On first glance, a visitor sees the brand’s logo, menu, primary call-to-action, and an image of the product. The copy is short and sweet, too. Your mobile website should follow the same brand style and color palate of your desktop version. Using a different variation will only distract visitors from your brand’s value. Choose Your Web Design Template Wisely Your web design template is the foundation for your site. Your goal is to create a useful and attractive website. There’s a lot that goes into finding the best web design template that meets that goals. Fortunately, website builders like our Gator Website Builder make it easy. We have hundreds of mobile-friendly templates for you to choose from, and they all follow the latest trends in modern web design. Take a look today to find the best one for your business. The Best WordPress Plugins Every Blog Needs
The post The Best WordPress Plugins Every Blog Needs appeared first on HostGator Blog . When you build your blog with WordPress, it’s easy to customize it and add cool features with plugins. But which plugins? You can choose from more than 54,000, which is kind of a lot. To help you avoid choice overload, we’ve compiled what we think are the best must-have plugins for new and growing bloggers, especially bloggers who want to gain subscribers, raise their social media profile, ace SEO, and more. WordPress Mailing List Plugins for Blogs Building an audience is the main goal for most bloggers, whether they’re creating a community for fun or profit. The cornerstone of audience-building is building an email list, so you can let your fans know when you publish a new post, launch a contest, or have something else to offer them. E mail Subscribers & Newsletters by Icegram is a free WordPress plugin that gives you a shortcode snippet to paste into your posts and pages wherever you’d like an opt-in box. As you add subscribers, you can use the plugin’s dashboard to view, import, and export contacts, create welcome and update emails, send test emails, and integrate with a third-party email marketing service like Constant Contact. WordPress Social Sharing Plugins for Blogs Add to Any lets you add social share buttons to your blog that look good on any device, load fast, and connect your content to more than 100 social networks and messaging apps. Want to see what’s getting shared and who’s following those links? Add to Any also integrates with your Google Analytics and Bitly accounts. Add to Any is free, so you don’t need to upgrade to access all its features. Do you have an archive full of posts you’d like to share again to reach new readers and build your subscriber list? The free version of Revive Old Posts will automatically share your old posts to Facebook and Twitter so you can get more mileage from your content. You can choose the sharing schedule, the number of old posts you want to share, hashtags, and other elements. The Pro version adds sharing for LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Tumblr. Both versions of Revive Old Posts support link shortening services like Bitly and Rebrandly. WordPress SEO Plugins for Blogs When people search for the topics you blog about, can they find your blog? Even great content can be hard to find if it’s not formatted, indexed, and optimized for search engines to understand. That’s why bloggers who want to rank well in searches typically add a few plugins to make that happen. We’ve blogged before about how schema.org formatting can help you generate rich Google search results for your reviews, recipes, articles, and other content. You can do this manually with code, or you can add the All In One Schema.org Rich Snippets WordPress plugin to your blog. This free plugin supports 9 common schema formats, including articles, people, recipes, reviews, and videos. When you install All In One, you get a dashboard that walks you through choosing how your snippets will display, where you’ll add the snippets on your site, and how to test your snippets to make sure they look good. You’ll also want a plugin to help Google’s search engine crawlers understand what’s on your site. You can install the Google XML Sitemaps WordPress plugin to handle this. However, if you’re also going to install Yoast SEO , you may want to use its XML mapping tool instead. (It’s not a good idea to use both at the same time.) Yoast is one of the most popular SEO plugins out there, and the free version offers a lot of tools to help you optimize your blog. For instance, Yoast helps you optimize each post for a keyword or keyphrase that you want to rank for, shows you how the post will look in Google search results, tells you how readable your post is before you publish it, keeps you from accidentally duplicating content within your site, and updates regularly to keep pace with Google’s ongoing improvements. If you have a large or fast-growing blog, you can detect and fix site-indexing crawl errors by connecting Yoast to your Google Search Console account. WordPress Performance Plugins for Blogs Jetpack is the Swiss Army knife of WordPress plugins, and it can tackle a lot of tasks for you, like scheduled social media posting, statistics collection, and performance improvements. Jetpack also adds its own layers of security to your WordPress blog. When you’re ready to start making money from your blog through ads or direct sales, one of the paid versions of Jetpack can help you with those tasks, too. As your blog grows, it can take longer for your pages to load, especially if you include lots of images in your posts. To avoid this slowdown, which can raise your bounce rate and affect your search rank, compress your images. The Smush Image Compression and Optimization WordPress plugin can handle this for you. You can “smush” images in batches of up to 50 or smush them individually, without losing image quality. (And yeah, pushing the “smush” button is fun.) If you want detailed analytics of your site traffic, the Google Analytics Dashboard Plugin for WordPress by MonsterInsights connects to your Google Analytics account and deploys your analytics tracking code for you so you don’t have to paste in the snippet yourself—all for free. Then you can see your Google analytics in your blog’s dashboard. A good backup program is insurance against blog catastrophes. Updraft Plus helps you automate site backups, store your backups in the cloud, and access them easily when you need to restore your site or move to a new host. The free version lets you automatically send your backups to Dropbox, Google Drive, your email, and other cloud services, and it makes it easy to restore your site even if you’re not tech-savvy. (Or, you can upgrade to an automated daily backup for your blog with CodeGuard . CodeGuard packs in additional security features with data backups for up to 5 websites.) Set Up Your WordPress Blog WordPress plugins can help you get the most out of your blog, but they can also impact your blog’s performance. Maximize your blog’s functionality and its performance with a managed WordPress hosting plan from HostGator. You’ll enjoy 2.5x faster load times, automated backups, and more. Is My Domain Name Available?
The post Is My Domain Name Available? appeared first on HostGator Blog . You’re really excited about the website idea you have. You can picture what you want it to look like and have a rough idea of the content you plan to include. But before you start building out your website, you need to figure out what its name will be. And that’s a question that’s complicated by the fact that you can’t choose just anything—it has to be something that has the domain name available. How Domain Names Work How domain names work is that they are the main address for a website online. A domain name is what people type into their browser to bring up your website, like www.cutepuppypictures.com or http://homemadesoaps.net . While technically, you have an IP address that identifies where your website lives on the web for other computers, the domain name is a name you choose that better matches what your website is. It’s easier for your visitors to remember, provides your website’s main identification online, and is an important component in how well you’ll perform in the search engines. Your domain name doesn’t technically have to match your website’s name, but if you want to avoid confusing your visitors and pick something that will be easy for them to remember, it should. Make sure to take your time when choosing a domain name , this is not something you want to rush and regret later. That’s why it’s important to consider what domain names are available before you decide what to name your website or business. Find Out: Is My Domain Name Available? If you already have a name in mind for your website, you can do a quick search to find out if it’s available at: https://www.hostgator.com/domains The search will show you: If the exact name you’re searching is available. What the availability is for different top-level extensions , such as .com, .net, or .org. What the cost of the domain is for the different top-level extensions. Suggested alternatives to your domain name that are available if it’s not, or that are cheaper than the exact name you’re searching for. With over 1.8 billion websites already on the web, the likelihood that the first idea you have for your website will be available is low. So if your first search reveals that your domain name is already taken , don’t be surprised. And don’t despair, you still have options. My Preferred Domain Name Isn’t Available, What Now? Now, you need to do some brainstorming to find a domain name that works for the website you have in mind and that is still available. Here are four steps to take. 1. Consider the suggested alternatives. HostGator’s domain search helpfully serves up a list of domain name ideas related to your search that are available as a .com. Give these options a look. If you see one you love, your search is over! You can register it right now and get to work building your website . Those suggestions are auto generated though, so a lot of the time, they won’t quite get at the main idea you want to express with your website. Algorithms just don’t think the way people do. 2. Consider different top-level domain options. Your next potentially easy option is to go for something other than .com. There is one big downside to consider here though: .com is what people think of first, so you risk people navigating to another site when they’re trying to find yours. On the other hand, many browsers now remember the websites users have visited before and auto-fill them in, so many of your repeat visitors will be able to find you without issue even if their impulse is to type in the wrong domain name. And when people end up on a different website than they intended to, their first impulse is to use Google to get to the right one, so as long as you show up in the search engine for your website’s name, they’ll still be able to find you. The sheer number of top level domains available today means there’s a decent chance you can find the domain name you had in mind available with one of them. But most top level domains communicate something specific, and you don’t want to choose one that’s not relevant to you. For example, if your business is based in the United States, choosing a .de domain name—the top level domain for German websites—doesn’t make sense. Some good general options that make sense for almost any website are: .net .cc .co .info .online .site .space .website .ws .tips .ninja .name (best for websites of individuals) .me (best for websites of individuals) .us (for US-based businesses) Some good ones to consider for businesses are: .biz .bz .store .agency .guru There are also a number of industry or topic domain names you can consider, a few examples include: .accountant .art .builders .design .fashion .food .fitness .tech If the domain you want is available for one of the top level domains that make sense for your business, then you can stop your search here. If you’re still not satisfied though, keep exploring your options. 3. Think of similar variations. A lot of the time, you can figure out a domain name that’s really close to the original one you had in mind that is still available. The person who had hoped for cutepuppypictures.com can continue their search for domain names that use hyphens or similes. For example: Cute-puppy-pictures.com Adorablepuppypictures.com Adorable-puppy-pictures.com Cutebabydogpictures.com Cutepuppyimages.com Etc. Get out your thesaurus and come up with a list of as many similar variations of the domain name as you can. It may take some work and a lot of searches, but you can probably find some variation that’s still available with a top level domain you want. 4. Brainstorm alternative ideas. If none of the previous steps helped you find a domain name that would work, then do some more brainstorming. Think about: Words related to what your website will be about. The similes from your thesaurus may not have given you what you need, but the English language has a lot of words. Try to think of as many related ones as you can. The Related Words tool can help. Clever puns. A good pun in your domain name is a way to give your website some personality right off the bat, while also helping you find a name that’s memorable without being obvious enough to have already been snatched up. If puns aren’t your specialty, the Pun Generator can help. Popular keywords. Keyword research not only reveals a lot of terms similar to the one you had in mind, but it also shows you what language people are using when they’re searching for what you plan to have on your website. And when possible, including a keyword in your URL can help with SEO (search engine optimization). Words that mean something to you. One of the best ways to come up with a domain name that 100 people before you haven’t already thought of is to make it personal. If your website will mostly be pictures of your puppy Buddy, something like buddyspuppypics.com will probably be more accessible than a more generic name, and will still be memorable and accurate. It will probably require some time and creativity, but by following these steps, you should eventually be able to find a domain name that’s available. I Found an Available Domain! What’s Next? You finally found an available domain that works for you. There’s no time to lose, claim it while you still have the chance! 1. Register the domain. Domain registration is quick and easy. You can register a domain name right at Hostgator. Whether or not you register through HostGator, you’ll want to make sure you choose an option for registering your domain that makes domain name management easier. You’ll need to renew your domain every year—and if you forget or are late paying, the domain could be snatched out from under you. If that happens, you’re not just losing the domain name itself, you’re losing all the recognition and SEO authority you’ve built on it so far. Look for a provider that provides auto-renewal and domain locking to save you from that trouble. 2. Consider domain privacy. When you register a domain, the company you buy it from is required to pass your contact information along to the ICANN WHOIS directory. The idea is that if a website owner uses their site to break the law, the government needs a way to track the owner down and hold them accountable. But the directory publishes that information on the open web where anyone can access it, which opens you up to dealing with contact from strangers and increased spam. If you’re not comfortable with that, some companies that provide domain registration also offer domain name privacy . For a small fee, they’ll replace the contact information they provide to the directory with a proxy email address, to save you from the nuisance of having your real contact information available where anyone could find it. 3. Choose your web hosting plan. You’re almost done! The main thing you need besides a domain to publish your website online is web hosting. Every website you see online is stored in a physical server somewhere. In most cases, the physical server is provided and maintained by web hosting companies that provide hosting for thousands of different websites. Your next big choice after deciding on a domain name is figuring out which web hosting platform and plan to go with. Most new websites can stick with an affordable shared web hosting plan , but websites that expect a lot of traffic or expect to need extra storage space and bandwidth should consider cloud hosting or VPS hosting . Whichever type of plan you go with, it’s important to choose a provider with a strong reputation for providing consistent service. Look for at least 99.9% uptime—that’s the amount of time your website will be available and working. Also consider how many domains your web hosting plan will allow. If you hope to have more than one over time (or have already registered a few), then you’ll need a plan that allows that. In addition, if your web hosting provider lets you manage your domain in the same place that you manage your web hosting, it will make your life easier over time—you’ll only have to set up billing and reminders in one system. 4. Build your website. If finding a good available domain seemed difficult, know that you’re just getting started. Now you have to do the work of building your website, launching it onto the web, and promoting it to the wider world. For that first part, if you don’t know anything about web design or coding, you can choose between hiring a professional designer to build your website for you, or investing in an affordable website builder . No matter what type of website you create, some elements of design are consistently important. Make sure that the website you build is: Responsive , so it works well on mobile. Any good designer should be able to create a responsive website, and many website builders include responsive templates. Optimized for search, which means identifying the primary keywords you want to rank for and including them in the URL, title, heading, and alt tags for each page of your website. Intuitive for visitors . Make sure the way you organize your website makes it easy for visitors to find what they’re looking for and navigate between different pages of the site. Create a clear menu and design each page so that it’s easy to find the main information you share on it. Finding the Right Available Domain Name is Just the Start Finding an available domain name that’s just right for your website is an exciting first step in starting your website, but it’s just that: a first step. Once your domain is registered, get to work planning out what your website will look like and bringing your idea into reality. Then work on your plan to promote your website to the world. The right domain name will definitely make it easier for people to find and remember your website, but with so many different websites online, it’s not enough. Be prepared to work on SEO, share your website on social media, and try out various marketing tactics to help people find your content. If the goal is to bring your ideas and products to the world, learning how to register a domain name is just one of many important steps to making that happen.
