CodeGuard (Cloud Backup)
The post CodeGuard (Cloud Backup) appeared first on HostGator Web Hosting Blog | Gator Crossing . For many of us, our websites are our lifeblood. They are how we make our living, and how we support our families. They are our businesses and our passions. The interesting thing about how important our websites are to us is that precious few of us actually take regular backups of our data. Why is this? No one knows, really. Likely it’s that each of us figures it’ll always be someone else who loses their data in some catastrophic event. Enter CodeGuard. For anyone who’s familiar with Apple’s Time Machine functionality, CodeGuard is very similar except it’s for your hosting server rather than your home computer. When you sign up with CodeGuard, you provide it the necessary credentials in order to access your data and take a complete backup. After that point, it regularly monitors your server for any changes. Any time CodeGuard detects a change (files being added, removed, or modified), it then takes an incremental backup and sends you an email to inform you of the fact. It’s the next feature that really sets CodeGuard apart: it allows you to restore back to any prior version of your website. All backups are stored in the cloud and you have multiple options for retrieving that data. You can, at any time, download a full .zip of your backup, choose an automatic full restore, or simply restore a single file or folder that you may have accidentally nuked. Basically, you have total control over your files with full accessibility at all times. CodeGuard protects your data from catastrophic potentialities, and it can certainly protect you from yourself in some instances. You can sign up for CodeGuard from right within your HostGator cPanel, simply click the CodeGuard icon within the Special Offers section. For more information, please see the related article from our KnowledgeBase: http://support.hostgator.com/articles/offers-bonuses/what-is-codeguard Continue reading

10 Reasons Why It’s Time To Update Your Social Media Strategy
The post 10 Reasons Why It’s Time To Update Your Social Media Strategy appeared first on HostGator Web Hosting Blog | Gator Crossing . In the ever-changing world of social media, it’s quite easy to fall off the wagon with your social strategy. The steady stream of new updates, features, and websites are enough to make anyone business owner’s head spin. Still, staying on top of social media trends has its rewards. Is it time for you update your social media strategy ? Read on to find out. 1. You Haven’t Been Paying Attention To New Trends Changes in consumer technology, like the relatively recent explosion in mobile web surfing , have a direct effect on how people use the internet. For instance, Facebook launched a mobile-only ad program last year, something that could be very lucrative for a company who knows how to use it. Since social media tends to adapt to trends in technology, these trends will ultimately affect your social media strategy. 2. You Haven’t Taken Feature Updates Into Account Anyone who has been on Facebook over the course of a year knows that things change all the time. Recently they implemented the social graph, which is a detailed way of searching for people on Facebook with like interests. More recently, Facebook gave their page analytics feature an overhaul to make it more detailed. Changes like these can impact your social marketing efforts, so try to stay on top of them. 3. You Don’t Know Why You Use Social Media Do you know why you’re on social media in the first place? If the answer is “because everyone else is,” then that’s the wrong answer. Why? Because it’s not a solid enough reason to drive your social marketing. Do you want to improve customer service response? Increase brand awareness before the opening of a new location? Social media can help you do this, but you have to define your motives first. 4. You’re Not Branching Out If your company or organization has yet to find a way to utilize social networks beyond Facebook and Twitter, you could be missing out on new opportunities to connect with prospects. Sites and apps like Pinterest, Youtube, and Instagram get tens of millions of hits each day. If your social media activities have been limited to only one or two social sites, it might be time to investigate how to expand your reach. Be creative. Picture, video, and location-based social sites have exploded in popularity, so be sure to go where the trends are leading. 6. You Aren’t Interacting With Followers Do you post content without really paying attention to what people have to say about it? If so, then you’re taking the “social” out of social media. It’s important to interact with fans and customers via your channels. It’s a good way to get feedback, address complaints, and see what you’re doing right. 7. You’re Being Too Spammy The age of sales talk is slowly dying on the internet. Today’s internet is more a conduit for conversation and information than anything else. Go over the last few things that you shared on your social media accounts. If you sound more like a robot or telemarketer than an accessible human being, then it’s time to figure out how to better relate to your audience. 8. You’re Not Managing The Interaction Should any unacceptable behavior or language make its way onto your business page, you should consider laying down some house rules. Create a document that clearly spells out disruptive behavior—such as inflammatory posts and spamming—and make it accessible to everyone who interacts on your social sites or blog. If anyone breaks any of the rules you’ve set down, you can either give them a warning or block them from your pages altogether. 9. You’re Wasting Too Much Time Posting Updates Updating each of your social networks one at a time can be tedious. If you’re still posting updates one at a time, consider simplifying the process with a scheduling tool like HootSuite. This program lets you monitor multiple Twitter and Facebook accounts and pages from the same interface, and even lets you schedule posts and tweets ahead of time. 10. You’re Not Being Original Anyone can share, retweet, and rehash news that they’ve read elsewhere, but do you have anything original to say to your audience? Sure retweeting and sharing valuable information is great, but you should also take time to create and share original content. If you need help in the content creation area, hire outside help. A professional writer, photographer, or social media consultant can help you create orginal, sharable content for your online communities. If any of the above applies to you, then don’t worry. You’re not alone. As mentioned before, social media moves fast, and it can be hard to keep up. Ever business should look at their strategy every few months to make sure it’s still working for them. No matter what, there is always room for improvement. Continue reading

5 Ways to Beef Up Your SEO This Fall
The post 5 Ways to Beef Up Your SEO This Fall appeared first on HostGator Web Hosting Blog | Gator Crossing . The autumn leaves are rolling in, signifying that now is a great time to beef up your SEO for the coming holidays. Most ecommerce websites receive more hits and sales in November and December than during any other time of the year. According to Comscore , online holiday shopping was up 14 percent in 2012, and the surge in online commerce is expected to increase even more during the 2013 holiday season. To make the most of the flood of buyers who will be hitting the internet this fall and winter, follow these five tips for seasonal SEO. Create Keyword Rich Landing Pages Since holiday shoppers will be searching for specific terms, the best way to get traffic is to create landing pages around specific keywords. One useful aspect about Google’s new Keyword Planner tool is that it not only returns results for specific terms, but for groups of similar keywords. It also gives you historical performance information when you hover over the stats button. Here you can see that Google searches for terms related to “Christmas presents for kids” start to peak in October. You should also plug in known consumer shopping days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. For instance, “Black Friday toy airplane sale” or “Cyber Monday smartphone deals.” You can also get insights from Google Trends. You can use this tool to look up historic information for your specific keywords, which will help you plan your promotions better. Publish your landing pages early with a “coming soon” message so that people can bookmark them and come back later. Create Holiday-Specific Content Content Marketing remains one of the best, low-cost ways for businesses to promote themselves online. The easiest way to do this is through a blog. A company’s blog is where you share about your industry, products, services, and company goings-on. It’s where consumers go for news and information that can help them solve problems. Aside from text-based blog posts, there are other forms of content you can share, including: Infographics, charts, and illustrations Podcasts and guest podcasts ebooks and special reports for download Slideshows Create content around holiday themes such as “Christmas decorating ideas” or “Great gift ideas for dad” (again, keyword research comes in handy here), but avoid creating run-of-the-mill content that we see every year. People want to see fresh content, so take some time to brainstorm on how to be unique while remaining relevant. This is also a good opportunity to create deep links to your landing pages. Remember that the point of content marketing is not to self-promote, but to offer valuable information to your customers. Also, don’t forget to make your content easily shareable. Use high quality images that will catch a reader’s eye, and make share buttons visible at the top and bottom of blog posts. Create Backlinks After you’ve created new content and landing pages, it’s time to get some link juice. Do this via your email newsletter and social media accounts like Twitter and Pinterest. Because of its visual nature, Pinterest is particularly great for promoting gifts. Start a Pinterest board around your holiday promotions, complete with keyword sets in the title and description. Also, don’t forget to link back from your boards to your landing pages and other content. Backlinks are essentially how people spread online information through word of mouth, so make sure your content is stuff that people would want to talk about and share. Start talking about your coming holiday promotions early so as to generate buzz, and give your links time to spread around. When creating a backlink profile, it’s important to remember not to engage in link scheming (see tip number five below). According to Google Webmaster guidelines, link schemes can include paying for native advertising (otherwise known as advertorials), engaging in large-scale guest posting, and using anchored keywords. Run a PPC Campaign Although PPC requires a budget, starting out is still much more affordable than traditional forms of advertising. Running a successful PPC campaign takes some time and planning, which is why companies often opt to hire outside agencies to handle it for them. However, going at it on your own is feasible. Most companies start out with Google Adwords and Yahoo/Bing adCenter, though there are also other networks to choose from. Start out by conducting research to see which keywords are best to rank for, then get to work on creating PPC ads that will make you stand out. See Hubspot’s recent article on creating PPC ads that people will want to click. Do Some Clean Up Have you reviewed Google’s Webmaster guidelines lately? This set of guidelines is what Google uses to determine which sites get rewarded for good SEO practices, and which get penalized for bad practices. This excellent resource at Feed the Bot highlights the most relevant aspects of the webmaster guidelines. Do an audit of your website (or hire someone to do it for you) to see if everything is in line with Google’s guidelines. That way you’re less likely to have the surprise of your life when your site is deindexed. As they say, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Fall is a prime time to revamp your SEO efforts to meet the coming holiday demand. It’s also a good time to reevaluate your brand and sales goals, since they must be in line with your online marketing efforts. The truth is, most ecommerce sites don’t put as much time into holiday preparation as they ought to. With good research and some earnest legwork, you can make your website holiday ready. Beginner’s Guide to Creating Stellar Original Content For Your Website
The phrase “content is king” has been repeated ad nauseum across the internet ever since Bill Gates first introduced the concept back in 1996. It’s been repeated so many times that the phrase has almost lost its meaning. Sure websites must have content, but how much of the content on the web is useful and/or original? Perhaps Mr. Gates should have said, “Good content is king.” Good content attracts readers, and prompts them to share it with friends. Fortunately, you don’t need to be a genius scribe to write great content. Just follow the recommendations outlined below. Write for Your Readers This might seem obvious, but too often site owners fall into the trap of creating content about what they think they should be addressing. They don’t think about what their intended audience really wants or needs. Think about the typical person who reads your content. What are their pain points? What problems can you help them solve? What information can you bring to them that would make their lives easier? If you’re ever at a loss as to how to answer these questions, do some research. You can do this in a number of ways, including: Asking your readers what they’d like to see more of Signing up for Google Trends to see what people are buzzing about Visiting Q&A websites like Yahoo Answers to see what people are talking about in particular categories Visiting relevant online forums to see what topics are most popular Performing a keyword search with a tool like SEMrush to see what related keywords are most popular Keep a List of Ideas Having a running list of blog post ideas is important. Keep a notepad or your phone handy so you can jot ideas down when lightening strikes, and add all of these ideas to a text document on your computer. Don’t be too selective about what you add to the list. Write down anything that comes to you, even if it seems imperfect. Often ideas need some time to marinate before they become something you can use. Spin That Idea Most blog post and article ideas lend themselves well to multiple pieces of content. Have an article on why saturated fat is bad for you? Why not write it from another angle, like what sources of saturated fat to avoid, or how to cut saturated fat from your kids’ diet? You can also look at the topic from a seemingly opposite stance, like writing on fats that help you lose weight. If you have a “list style” article on top super foods, highlight each super food in its own separate blog post. When you get an idea for a new topic, spend some time brainstorming different angles. Take Your Time It’s perfectly understandable that you want to publish that genius blog post now. However, consider the implication of not taking your time to properly craft a blog post: In your hurry, you miss some grammar and spelling mistakes that your spellchecker didn’t catch. You leave out a couple of good points you would have remembered had you not been rushing. You realize you could have used better word choices. You forget to attribute a source, include a link, search for a picture, or add any number of small details that would have made your blog post more polished. Yes, the web moves at a fast pace, but not so fast that you have to sacrifice the quality of your content to keep up. Create Serial Content This is a great way to go in-depth on a subject without creating content that’s too lengthy. For example, Erin McNeany of the Never Ending Voyage published a very popular three-part blog series entitled, How to Sell Everything You Own . This is a topic that specific groups of people (world travelers) search for often. The series is so popular that it still ranks high in the SERPs, even though it was published in 2010. Think of a daunting problem you could help your readers with, and create serial content that would solve that problem. Invite Guest Bloggers No blog is an island unto itself, so feel free to invite others in your field to contribute to your blog. An added advantage is that the guest blogger will bring traffic with them if they’re well known enough. Polish Your Skills Writing is a skill that can always be strengthened. Invest time in improving your writing skills with resources like the Purdue OWL and Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips . Above all, practice, practice, practice. This isn’t just important from a technical standpoint. The more you write, the more you establish your personal voice. Anyone can create content, but not everyone can create good or even great content. If you can put these guidelines into action, then you’re on your way to creating great content that your website visitors will ultimately value. Continue reading

7 Steps to Proper New Website SEO
If you’ve recently launched a new website, or if you’re on the cusp of launching one, congrats! You’ve done the hard work of setting the whole thing up, or have paid good money to get it done. Now it’s up to you to make it stand out from the oodles of other websites on the web. If that sound daunting, it’s because it is. According to World Wide Web Size , at least 3.76 billion web pages have been indexed as of August 19th 2013. The good news is that not all of these web pages are your competition. Many of them lack proper SEO, and worse, interesting or helpful content. If you’ve already got the helpful content part handled, follow these steps to help jettison your website upward through the SERPs. Step 1: Perform Keyword Research This should be done as early on as possible, even before work on the website begins. This is because you need to know what your website should be ranking for. Remember to base your keywords on more than what people are searching for in Google. Erin Everhart said it best in her Search Engine Watch article How to Make Your Keywords Fit Your Marketing Message : “When you have those uncomfortable ‘So, what do you do?’ conversations with the person next to you on an airplane, a keyword is one of the first things out of your mouth.” Your keywords should encompass your brand. You need to integrate keywords throughout your website, including in your page content, blog posts titles, alt tags, and even in your video. However, make your keyword usage as natural as possible. Going overboard can make your website looks spammy. Step 2: Optimize Content Not only should you incorporate keywords into your titles, tags, and text body, but you should also make your content shareable. By now you’ve noticed that just about all blog posts have social share buttons either at the top or the bottom of the post (though best practices say that it’s best to have them at the top). Not only do search engines use keywords in evaluating SEO, but they also use social signals like Facebook shares and Twitter tweets to evaluate the popularity of your content. Step 3: Watch Your Links The SEO ways of old dictate a certain approach to linking. It involves distributing articles with optimized keyword anchor text to other sites, and gaining backlinks from any old website with a high enough PageRank. Those days are no more. Google has cracked down on articles and press releases with keyword optimized text , so you could get your website penalized for it. Also, search algorithms have gotten smart enough to recognize whether the website linking to you is relevant or not. Only get your backlinks from websites it makes sense to be connected to, and add the rel=nofollow attribute to keyword optimized text so that it doesn’t pass for PageRank. Step 4: Install Plugins If you’re using WordPress then you have no shortage of plugins to choose from for your site. However, you should know that SEO plugins aren’t exactly a cure-all. Rather, they optimize your website’s code for search engines to pick up on. Some popular options include All in One SEO Pack , Yoast , and Scribe . Each SEO plugin has its own offerings, so investigate which one is best for your site. Step 5: Install Analytics Analytics software helps you to keep your fingers on the pulse of your website. If you’re new to analytics, Google’s free analytics program is a great place to start. Open a Google Analytics account if you haven’t already, and add it to your site. Google Analytics allows you to monitor vital traffic stats including unique visits, bounce rate, and conversion rates. It even lets you do cool things like split testing and analyzing your traffic in excruciating detail. Step 6: Redirect Traffic If you’re changing your URL, then you’ll need to redirect your traffic. You want to make this as painless to your visitors as possible. As suggested by Google , use 301 redirects to channel traffic from your old site to your new one. Instead of redirecting an old web page to the new site’s root, direct it to the corresponding page. This is for permanent changes only. If the redirect is temporary, use a 302 redirect. Step 7: Keep the Momentum Stay consistent with your website. Consistently post to and update your social media outlets. Listen to feedback, watch for bugs, and otherwise make adjustments where necessary. Keep updating, tweaking, and improving your website. Make it a dynamic, thriving web entity that people will be attracted to because of its valuable offerings, whether paid or free. You should also remember that SEO isn’t a magic bullet, but a way for valuable websites to get the exposure they deserve. The higher the value of your website to your visitors, the better SEO will work for you. Continue reading
