WordPress began as simple blogging software, but it has now grown into a full-fledged website builder with a massive and interactive community. 1. Easy To Use Backend WordPress has a very easy to use backend. They’ve had the same backend for a number of years, which means there are a number of tutorials to guide you through anything you may be unsure of. Small Learning Curve Customizing your WordPress theme couldn’t be easier. Most themes also come with easy to follow documentation that will allow you to set up and populate your theme rather quickly. A lot of other website building platforms require little technical knowledge to get up and running, but the curve increases very quickly. 3 Critical Mistakes You Might Be Making with Your Business Website
The post 3 Critical Mistakes You Might Be Making with Your Business Website appeared first on HostGator Blog | Gator Crossing . A strange but true fact: roughly one out of every two small businesses still doesn’t have a website. That wouldn’t have been particularly surprising 20 years ago. But today? It seems rather strange. Especially when you consider that nearly 100% of consumers now do at least some of their shopping online for products and services that interest them. So if you’re a small business owner, and you do have a website, that automatically gives you a huge leg-up over about half of your competition. But what about the other half of your competition – the half that does have a website? If you’re like many small businesses, you might not be faring so well against those competitors. That’s because many small businesses have websites that are much less effective than they could be. And in fact, many small businesses are making the very same mistakes with their websites. According to the Small Business Administration , there are 3 critical mistakes that many small businesses are making with their online presence: #1. No Call-to-Action Let’s say that you have a website. And let’s say that a prospective customer lands upon your homepage. Do you tell that prospective customer what you want them to do? Many small business websites don’t. They seem satisfied to let visitors wander around aimlessly for a bit until they wander off the website – likely never to return. And that’s a mistake that more than two-thirds of small business websites make. But it’s important to let website visitors know what you want them to do. In fact, every single page of your website should have a designated purpose – a most-wanted response. And the copy and graphics on that page should work to elicit that most-wanted response. But you’re not likely to get that most-wanted response without telling your website visitors what you want them to do. #2. Mobile Incompatibility The world is going mobile. Only a few short years ago, most customers accessed your website via a desktop or laptop computer. But that’s no longer true. These days, it’s likely that just as many customers visit you virtually with a smart phone or a tablet. And that might be a problem for you. Because a website design that is perfectly fine for viewing with a desktop/laptop computer may not be particularly suitable for viewing with a mobile device. In fact, it’s very likely that your website is not mobile compatible. Because fewer than 10% of mobile websites are mobile compatible. And if you think that mobile incompatibility is no more than a slight inconvenience for some of your website visitors, think again. Google takes mobile compatibility very seriously – and may seriously ding your site in search results if you’re not mobile friendly. (Not sure whether your site is mobile-friendly? Use this free tool to easily find out.) #3. Cold-Shouldering Social Media Social media is all the rage these days. Social media portals such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest have become wildly popular. And many marketers are trying to tap into that popularity as a new way to reach customers. In truth, there’s some dispute about the effect of social media marketing for businesses. But many marketing experts feel that social media holds far too much promise to ignore. As one expert noted in a Forbes article , there are a great many potential benefits to social media marketing. Even so, more than 80% of small business websites don’t even bother to link to any social media accounts. And that might be a massive mistake. It’s A Bad News / Good News Scenario The three critical mistakes listed above are made by the majority of small business websites. So if you’re the owner or operator of a small business, the odds are strong that you’re in that group. That’s the bad news. The good news, though, is that simply having a website places you ahead of half of your competition. And you can compound that advantage by eliminating any of these three critical mistakes that you might be making with your website. Do that, and you’ll place your business in the rarified air of dominating your online competition. And that’s a very good place to be. web hosting Continue reading
How To Sell A Website
The post How To Sell A Website appeared first on HostGator Blog | Gator Crossing . Do you own a website with stable traffic and revenue, but have grown tired of maintaining it, don’t know how to take it to the next level, or you could simply use some extra cash? If you answered yes, you might want to consider selling your website. Website flipping, as it is affectionately termed, is a quickly growing industry that allows owners of websites and web businesses to easily liquidate their online assets. With over 600,000 users and upwards of $140,000,000 in transactions processed to date, Flippa is universally regarded as the premiere destination for selling websites. Sellers on Flippa list their websites up for sale in eBay style auctions where buyers looking to make acquisitions have the opportunity to place a bid. Sites sold on Flippa include the massively popular ShipYourEnemiesGlitter.com sold for $85,000 in January 2015, the viral news publisher The Inquisitr for $330,000 in May 2011, and even FaceMash, which was originally launched by Mark Zuckerberg and sold on Flippa for $30,000 in 2010. So, it’s clear that Flippa is the premiere destination for web entrepreneurs, but how does one actually go about selling a website on the platform? Check out the following tips and tricks that can help you successfully sell your website. Pre-Sale Preparing your site for sale is a key step in the process of selling a website. The reason being that when it comes time to list your site for sale, the more information you provide the more confidence buyer will have in the listing. In order to provide the right information, it is crucial that you have several things in place before you. Of course, the two most important things you will want to keep track of are traffic and revenue. Keeping detailed records of both of these metrics is essential to a successful sale. Traffic When it comes to monitoring and analyzing your traffic, Google Analytics is the industry standard. One of the great things about Google Analytics is that the platform easily allows for website owners to provide access to traffic data to interested buyers. Quite frankly, you should have Google Analytics installed on all of your websites from the moment you launch them. Before selling a website you should aim to have at least 12 months of Google Analytics data. Revenue As far as revenue goes, it is vital that you keep accurate records of all revenue and expenses month by month. By far, the number one thing buyers consider when valuing a website is profit, and without accurate financial records you are simply not going to be able to accurately convey the value of the site. In addition to keeping accurate records, make sure that your records are provable. To do this keep separate accounts for your web businesses, take advantage of backend sales reports, and avoid migrating platforms without saving all financial data beforehand. Valuation Before selling your site, you will want to get a general idea of what it can potentially sell for at auction. Typically, websites sell at a multiple of between 1x to 3x yearly profit. Of course, there are countless websites that sell below this range, there are wild fluctuations within the range, and there are even websites that sell for above this range. The more stable, sustainable, and unique the business the higher it should sell for. All of that said, the only way to get a true valuation is to list your site for sale and let the market decide. Setting Up Your Auction Flippa makes it easy to set up an auction for your website. You’ll be prompted to provide historical information about your site as well as detailed traffic and financial information. The more transparent and open you can be the better, as buyers are unlikely to place a bid on an auction in which the seller is withholding pertinent information about the site. Listing Description This is your opportunity to sell. Remember the person who will read this listing description is evaluating this as a business, so instead of attempting to sell them with superfluous and unnecessary language, try to sell them on the facts. Make sure to discuss factors about your website such as the business model, monetization method(s), marketing efforts, challenges, future opportunities, and the reason why you are selling. Auction Management Regardless of how the auction starts out, avoid jumping the gun and getting discouraged. Most bids typically come in the final 24 hours of an auction. If you list your site for sale, be prepared to stick it out to the end. The most important thing to remember is to stay active. Sellers that fail to respond in a timely manner to questions, or sellers that are clearly evasive almost always get called out on it and this leaves a bad taste in the mouth of potential buyers. Remember, you want to leave a good impression, because buyers are not only evaluating the business, they’re evaluating whether or not they would be comfortable doing business with you. In short, always put your best foot forward. Post Sale So, your site just sold to the high bidder, what comes next? You’re not quite done yet. It’s just as crucial that you remain involved and active in the post-sale process, as this will significantly reduce the chances of your sale falling through. The first thing you will want to determine is how the buyer will pay for the asset. It is ALWAYS recommended that you accept payment via escrow, as this is the safest option for both parties. Flippa offers a free escrow service, so it’s really the only option you should be using. Once the money has been placed securely into escrow, you should be notified via email. At that point you can begin transferring the assets of the business over to the buyer. After the transfer of assets is complete, escrow should release the funds to you, and it may take 3 to 5 business days for the funds to clear into your account. Closing Thoughts An auction for an online business is a bit like a marathon. It’s a long and arduous process that will require significant involvement on your end. You should make sure that you have enough time to participate fully or you risk selling your site for less than it is worth. However, if you have legitimate money making web business, and you follow some of the tips and tricks above, you should have no issues in achieving a successful sale and putting cash in your pocket. 5 Steps to Creating a Blog that Can Change Your Life
The post 5 Steps to Creating a Blog that Can Change Your Life appeared first on HostGator Blog | Gator Crossing . It’s a bold statement… but it’s true! A blog really can change your life for the better. It doesn’t matter if you are working a regular 9-5 job, currently in school or even an entrepreneur or have your own multi-million dollar business — blogs are amazing and they can do wonders for yourself and your brand. Before I tell you how you can use a blog to “change your life”, it would only make sense for me to first tell you about how a blog did this for myself. After all, what good is advice from someone if they don’t have the means or history to give it! I’ve been an online marketer since roughly 1995, but it wasn’t til 2007 that I decided to launch my own blog at ZacJohnson.com. Through this blog I would focus on building my personal brand and help other learn how to do the same with online marketing. Jump forward almost eight years and the blog has completely changed my life and and business for the better — both personally, professionally and monetarily. Now let’s dive into the importance of why you need to create a blog, how simple it is and how it can actually change your life for the better in the process. Step 1: Getting Started When it comes to getting started with your own web site or blog, it’s actually quite simple. All you need to do is secure a domain name, web hosting and install WordPress. It sounds like a lot, but it’s actually pretty simple. This can all be done through HostGator (who I use for many of my sites), or through any other top web hosting companies . The most important part of this process is picking a domain name ( www.sitename.com ) that you are going to use for your site. I always recommend everyone try to secure their real name as a .com if it’s currently available. The more generic your name, the more likely it will be that it’s already registered. If so, you might just need to get a bit creative. I also recommend you stick with a .com, .net or .org TLD. Lastly, you will also need to setup your web site hosting and install WordPress. All three of these components (domain, hosting and WordPress) can be done within HostGator in just a few minutes time. HostGator also offers one-click WordPress installation, so you don’t need to mess with files or uploading software. Step 2: Building a Blog with Your Passion in Mind With all that being said, you can appreciate how easy it is to setup a blog of your own and have it live within just a few minutes. It’s also important to note that anyone can setup a blog, and that there are over 200 million blogs on the internet today — which means your blog is going to need to be pretty special to stand out from the crowd. When it comes time to pick a quality domain name and launch your blog, you will want to create a blog around your personal name, a passion of yours or your existing business or brand. Before figuring a topic for your blog, here are just a few reasons why people start a blog in the first place: Passion / Hobby – Your own little space on the internet to write about whatever you like. Personal Brand – A place for you to build an online profile, resume and make it easy for others to find you online. Business – Share information on your company while creating quality content around products and services. Most blogs start out as a passion or a fun side project and turn into something much bigger down the road. Obviously, the more passionate you are about something, the more likely you are to put more interest and focus in it. This is where many bloggers fail, as blogging is a longterm project and when bloggers aren’t seeing the results they are looking for (traffic, readers and revenue), many will lose interest and just stop. At the end of the day, your blog is only as good as the content you create. Step 3: Creating Killer Content and a Meaningful Blog The success of your blog lies within the content that you create. With hundreds of millions of other blogs out there fighting for attention, you are going to need to creation something pretty amazing to stand out from the crowd. Just on WordPress alone, over 40 million posts are going live every month! (source: Statista ) To find success in blogging, you also need to be very “ niche specific “. By this we mean very focused. For example, if you want to write about sports, it would be in your best interest to niche down from “sports” to a specific player or team. Here’s how a niching down a topic of focus might work. SPORTS > > BASKETBALL > > NBA > > CLEVELAND CAVALIERS > > LEBRON JAMES The reason you want to niche down is so you can eventually become the authority in your space and reach people that are looking for exactly what you are writing about. The same process we took above can be applied to nearly any niche, service, product or topic. You also don’t want to be too generic, as no one will be able to find exactly what they are looking for when on your site, and it will be way too hard for you to rank in the search results for ‘generic keywords’ at the same time. Once you’ve niche’d down and found a winning topic, it’s time for you to start creating content… but remember, you need to create really awesome content to compete in the world of blogging. Take a look at what the top ranking blogs (based on your topic) are writing about, and see how you can do it better. If they are writing text articles, you need to be doing text and images. If you wanted to take it a level deeper, you could even start doing your own video. The best way to create killer content for your site is to think of yourself as a visitor and if you would actually find value in what you are about to publish. Step 4: How to Get People to Find Your Blog You have your blog topic, you’ve created content and now you are waiting on an audience… This is where patience comes into play. You need to remember that blogging is a long term project and take time and effort to mature (especially if you aren’t backing it with any paid advertising). However, this doesn’t mean that you need to keep writing content and just “hope” people start coming to your site. Not at all… here’s are some of the best ways to get people to start finding your blog much faster and easier than if you were to “just write content”. Guest blog on other relevant sites in your industry ( KissMetric’s guide to guest blogging ) Setup social media accounts for both your personal name and your blog / sites Contact other relevant sites in your niche and see if they find value in your content and would like to share it with their audience Leave comments on other popular blogs within your niche (which also leaves incoming links back to your site) Create “out-of-the-box” material for your blog, such as comprehensive guides and infographics that others will want to share Each of the methods above are all perfect for growing awareness, traffic and links back to your site… which will also help with your search rankings. Best of all, nearly all of these methods are free and will just take some time for you to setup. Step 5: Becoming the Authority Within Your Niche After all is said and done… you might just become an authority in your space as a result of your blog! To become the authority in your space, you must be very knowledgeable on what you are writing about and also provide value with purpose. For example, if you were just starting a blog and wanted to be well known in the sports world, one of the best ways to do this would be to interview as many professional or well-known athletes as you could. The more interviews you have, the more people will see your name alongside the professional athletes, which brings more attention and authority to your name as well. This same tactic is often used in the world of blogging and online marketing as well. In the previous section I mentioned several ways to get your name out there and how to increase traffic to your blog — all of which also help with establishing yourself as an expert within your industry as well. Once you do become an expert within your industry, that is when the magic happens and opportunities come knocking on your door everyday. When I started my blog, I didn’t have any readers and I was writing content just for myself. Now I have thousands of readers to the site daily and as a result of my blog, I’ve been able to speak at different events around the world, star in a documentary in Hollywood, CA, write a book, meet celebrities and professional athletes and also create a new business and source of income in the process. Yes! You truly can change your life with a blog… and it all starts with taking action today! ***** Zac Johnson is the CEO of MoneyReign, Inc.
