Building Your Start-Up In An Evolving Technological Era
The post Building Your Start-Up In An Evolving Technological Era appeared first on HostGator Blog | Gator Crossing . You’ve heard it before, “Small businesses have never been easier to start,” or conversely, “Fifty percent of all start-ups won’t be around in five years.” The truth is, the resources and information to begin planning a business have never been more accessible thanks to the internet. Everything from marketing to building a web-page equipped with responsive design can be learned from the comfort of home. Business itself, however, has not gotten any easier. If anything, the world of the sale has only become more competitive. In this article we’d like to discuss what foundational steps are still necessary to getting started, while focusing on the possibilities presented with a globalized market-place. Planning A Foundation It’s important to imagine a business as being a living, breathing organism whose very life is dependent on the planning and investment placed in it. The best business owners make their careers extensions of their personality, strengths and skill sets. Knowing yourself and the lifestyle you like to live is a tremendous first step to developing a service others will respond to. Ask yourself three questions: What skill or product can I offer that enough people need? Does this business already exist? If so, how can I do it better? Will this business still be in demand five to ten years from now? A foundation in the business world signifies room for growth, and a stable platform from which sustainability can be achieved. Without one, your business is 50% more likely to fail according to a study written by Paul Tiffany in “Business Plans for Dummies”. To get familiar with the look of a business plan, we’d highly advise checking out the steps involved at the Small Business Administration’s website . Finding Momentum In The 20 th Century Rather than outlining the legal logistics , and discussing what form of business structure you should follow, we’d like to explore how to approach making sales in such a diverse economy. Apparent or not, making money has moved farther away from the cash register every year. According to PR Newswire , 89% of consumers prefer shopping online rather than in a store. A trend that has extended prominently into the mobile market as devices are being optimized to support mobile browsing and e-commerce. It may surprise you to know, but: Four out of five consumers used smart phones to shop in 2013 78% of retailers plan on investing in mobile technology this year Global 3G coverage is expected to be at 21% in 2014, increasing access for mobile users What This Means Ask yourself one more question: Will what you’re selling be able to exist in the online market space? That is to say, your service or product can be seen, sold and shipped to anywhere in the world. One of the greatest factors being considered in business models nowadays, is how to best utilize the power of global connectivity. Think about it. What once was a limiting and location based market has now expanded to the eyes of anyone capable of accessing your web-page. Which leads us into the next point. If you’re not interested or are incapable of selling your product/service directly, having an online presence is still a must when it comes to how people choose businesses today. The faster your company can establish itself in the search engines, the more likely you will begin to see a profit. Steps To Begin Optimizing Your Web-Page The optimizing phase is a great place to be at for a start-up. It means your brand has been developed, you have something ready for sale, and all that remains is allowing your business to be seen by those interested in your trade. 1. Build A Website With A Responsive Design Due to the increasing amount of mobile users, a factor to retaining traffic is whether or not your website will work equally as well from a smart-phone or tablet. Many customers will give up if a page doesn’t load correctly, or if it takes too long while browsing on a mobile network. Responsive Web Design (RWD) is a way of building your website to adjust gracefully between a computer, smart phone, tablet, or any other device of varying screen resolution. Many hosting sites have RWD built into the newer themes, saving you the extra dollar when it comes to having someone write the code instead. To remain competitive in 2014, it’s imperative that your information can be accessed no matter what device it’s found on. 2. Make Your Website Visible There’s a great deal to be said about how a website ranks in the search engine nowadays. Google, for example, has completely updated their algorithms to allow for more authentic and viable content to appear before any spam based pages. If Search Engine Optimization (SEO) seems like an entirely new language, it may be worth the investment to hire a company capable of having your website rank before your competitors. 3. Understand Your Customers With Analytics Part of remaining in business is understanding what your customers want. By using Google Analytics you’ll be able to monitor how much traffic your site receives, as well as how they move through its pages. By knowing what content gets page visits, you can begin to cater parts of your service towards areas of higher demand. 4. Tap Into Social Media It may not be the first stop for new customers, but the advantages of sharing your business and its updates with all of your existing social circles free of charge is unbeatable in the marketing world. Word of mouth is still one of the most popular means of referral, and if someone can recommend your company through Facebook it’s more likely an individual will trust your friend than a review left on Yelp. Many businesses have learned the expenses involved with marketing, and with how much you can benefit from Facebook for free , it’s definitely an option you should consider once you’re ready. What Is Net Neutrality And Why Does It Matter?
The post What Is Net Neutrality And Why Does It Matter? appeared first on HostGator Blog | Gator Crossing . Net neutrality is the basic premise that all online data should be treated equally, without discrimination, without additional charges, and without blocking or throttling internet usage by all ISPs (Internet Service Providers) or by the government. It is uncensored access, equal access, and unrestricted access. As Senator Franken (of Minnesota) has been quoted as saying “Net neutrality is the First Amendment issue of our time.” The internet was designed as an open medium of communication, one in which all users could access all content (within the legal requirements for content access in certain cases) without being restricted from doing so. There are many that argue that net neutrality no longer exists, in light of the fact that the FCC’s previous rulings on the matter were recently struck down, but in light of the publicity that we, the users of the internet, have brought to this issue, in light of the protests that we have made, the FCC is taking steps to create new net neutrality rules, working to try to keep the public’s desires at heart (a first for the FCC, one could argue!). The FCC’s actions are not entirely altruistic, being concerned with the creation of monopolies and the like, but, the fact of the matter is that net neutrality is not yet dead. If net neutrality ceases, we could be looking at a creation of an internet bogged down by fees, one in which the user must pay to access certain types of content. One in which Netflix does not have to pay a toll to have its content streamed, and one in which those tolls are not passed on in fees to the customers who wish to use it. It is not just streaming that would be affected, however, but all content. For example if you wanted access to the news websites, you could be charged a fee, and another fee could be charged if you wanted to look at internet memes. The sky would be the limit if net neutrality dies out completely. So yes, pay attention to anything involving net neutrality, and remember, as we said back in 2011 – “We here at HostGator support a free internet. An internet in which free information and unhindered distribution of said information is an unalienable human right.” We still stand by this statement and we believe that you need to know what’s going on in the world of the internet today! Perilous Pivots: When A Dream Meets Reality
The post Perilous Pivots: When A Dream Meets Reality appeared first on HostGator Web Hosting Blog | Gator Crossing . Editors Note – Cy is a friend of HostGator, currently pursuing entrepreneurial dreams in Silicon Valley. We have asked him to share his adventures. If you missed it see Part 1 The Spark: A Startup Is Born. Startups are inherently messy. The media makes it appear as if home run successes happen on the first try. In reality all progress is the result of founders careening for months between false fits and starts until they land on the idea that works. Contastic’s story is no different. The False Start With a promising idea in hand I was accepted into the Lightspeed Venture Fellows program and provided a generous grant to build Contastic. During the summer, I met my co-founder Kevin and together we engaged with the top investors/entrepreneur community around Silicon Valley. This got us excited about the hot space that is mobile CRM – taking the basic processes of managing a sales team from the desktop to the phone. Over the next two months we built our mobile CRM. Investors loved it. However customers weren’t adopting the beta versions as readily as we’d hoped. We attributed the apathy to an incomplete product. It was instead a sign of a flawed focus – most people didn’t want to write notes on their mobile phone. So, when we finally launched, it was bittersweet. By that time we knew that the product wouldn’t pick up. So, we changed the name to PeopleNotes to preserve our company name and launched it. The app never got more than a few hundred downloads – an App Store Flop: Rediscovering Relentless Focus on the Customer So where did we go wrong? We built for the people around us – technologist and investors – not our customers. We mistakenly let the most convenient information, from those around us, take the place of the most relevant information, from those customers we would need to seek out. Committing to focus on our customer to the exclusion of everything else was the turning point for Contastic. It’s no mistake that this is what Mark Zuckerburg keeps on his desk: Credit: Masahble http://mashable.com/2012/02/01/mark-zuckerberg-ipo-pic/ The Pivot By pouring over the usage analytics from PeopleNotes we discovered that, while people did not like taking notes, they loved our automated emails to keep them in touch. So, we doubled down on that – pivoting from a mobile notes product to a web-based staying in touch product. And over the next month we built what became Contastic. There was no big launch or press announcement. Just a quick post to Facebook. Over the next two months we iterated with a small group of users and obsessively measured our funnel. Analytics told us what was wrong. Then we’d talk to customers to figure out WHY. Picking Up Steam After twelve weeks of iteration we’ve developed a clear idea – as defined by our customers – of what Contastic is and who it’s built for. Contastic is an email personalization engine for salespeople. By combining Linkedin and Gmail data Contastic automatically generates sales emails complete with content personalized to a prospect’s interests. By reducing the time it takes to send relevant emails from minutes to seconds Contastic enables salespeople to work more prospects, generate more leads and close more sales. We also discovered new industries for Contastic beyond sales . Some of our top users are generating referrals for realtors , discovering jobs for freelancers , and building client relationships as consultants . Our user base is now doubling monthly as well as picking up paid users. It’s time for us to finally step back into the ring and raise our round. Stay tuned for the third and final installment– Raising the Bar – Fundraising and the Future About Cy I’m an engineer who loves to sell. My career started out in big data engineering for Microsoft evolved into a sales role that landed me as the founder of Contastic ( getContastic.com ). I bring the hard data-driven approach of an engineer to the softer science of sales. It’s always a pleasure for me to meet new people and help them evolve their sales practices. I blog at blog.cykho.com and tweet @cykho. web hosting Continue reading

Inexpensive Tools To Help You Increase Online Sales
The post Inexpensive Tools To Help You Increase Online Sales appeared first on HostGator Web Hosting Blog | Gator Crossing . Fostering additional sales is a priority of virtually every business on the planet. After all, growth requires additional revenue, allowing you to reinforce your offerings to better serve your customers. However if you are a startup, or simply cash-strapped, you probably don’t have the capital to pour thousands into sales lead services. Thankfully there are several tools available to help increase online sales that are both efficient and inexpensive. Lead Generation ZoomInfo Community Edition – ZoomInfo offers several paid plans but has a free database with over 60 million contacts available under its community edition license. The caveats are two-fold: you have to share your business contacts with ZoomInfo and you are limited to 100 contacts per month. If you are just starting out, it is an excellent tool for leveraging a community of aspiring businesses to the success of all involved. Lead411 – Another searchable database, Lead411 offers great detailed information including email addresses and phone numbers for contacts. It is not free, but is a reasonable $29.95 per month and offers you access to over 100,000 company profiles and 700,000 executives. If you decide to upgrade to the $39.95 plan, you are permitted access to nearly three times that many contacts. The one drawback with this particular service is the sometimes questionable quality of the information therein, so tread with caution. Jigsaw – Jigsaw is part of the prolific and ubiquitous Salesforce.com. You earn points for adding or updating any of their contacts and can then use those points on free contacts. They offer paid plans but if you are cash strapped you can start out by earning free credits and building your address book in the process. All listings include name, title, email, phone number and address. Pipeline and Contact Management Zoho – Zoho is a customer relationship management (CRM) program unlike any other. The basic level is free and allows you to have up to three users and 5,000 records. With mobile access and a usable interface, the app sets itself apart from competitors, to your benefit. In addition, it can scale with your business and the upgraded plan is only $12 per month. Streak – if you are using Gmail as your email client then you Streak is a must-have. It is a simple plugin that integrates your CRM directly into your inbox, enabling management of multiple contact conduits simultaneously. You can designate your contacts as leads, prospects, customers, etc all within Gmail. Furthermore, sharing data with co-workers is easy, allowing the ability to share part of your inbox with others. For the busy or forgetful business-person, it can even schedule emails to send later. Contact Monkey – Another powerful free add-on is Contact Monkey. This tool lets you know who opens the emails you have sent, how they opened it (mobile or desktop), and if they clicked on any links. When working to tailor your communications for best reception, this data is invaluable. Rapportive – When dealing with clients, context is crucial. Also an add-on to Gmail, this tool integrates all the data about your contact next to their emails for easy viewing and consideration. You will see their picture, pertinent data, and any public social networking info, giving you a comprehensive picture of their online presence. Newsle – If your contact appears in the news, it is always a great reason to touch base with them. Newsle tracks anyone you know with your social media network and notifies you if they appear in the news. It is a great way to have an excuse to get in touch with a prospect, either to capitalize on a financial success, or wish them well in the event of difficult times. While this list is certainly not comprehensive, it is a great place to start. These inexpensive and free sales tools will help you generate some new sales leads and manage those leads more effectively to increase your online sales, synergizing to assist your business in one of its primary goals: revenue through efficient outreach. web hosting Continue reading

How To Develop A Clear Voice For Your Brand
The post How To Develop A Clear Voice For Your Brand appeared first on HostGator Web Hosting Blog | Gator Crossing . There are many elements of your business that contribute to its success, but perhaps the most important (and intangible) is your brand. From the visual design of your ads to the reputation of your customerservice team, your brand has a voice, and identifying it can improve many aspects of your operations. By understanding the importance of this voice, identifying the characteristics that articulate it, and honing in on your desired perception, you too can take advantage of this powerful tool. Understanding Voice First, it’s important to understand what “voice” is in a marketing sense. Simply put, it is how you say things and what language you utilize when talking about your products, services, and business. Your voice creates a culture that your customers will recognize and relate to. If properly implemented everything your business produces (emails, website copy, social media messages, etc.) will all have this same tone. Well utilized, a clear voice will connect you to your customer through consistent rhythm, pacing, word choice, and aim. Defining Your Identity So how can you craft this elusive unique voice for your brand? The key lies in identifying the following three traits: ● What your brand is ● Who your target customer is ● What you sound like Maintaining a voice that’s consistent with your current marketing efforts will help strengthen your reputation, identifying your target customer will help craft a voice that resonates with them, and determining what your voice will sound like will help craft the language you use. While these items can be challenging to nail down, the following steps will help you identify the points that separate you from competitor and help you craft a clear voice that communicates efficiently and personally with your customers: 1. Identify your company’s values- Why was your company started? What is the driving force as to why you are in business? It should be clear from your mission statement, catch phrase or tagline. 2. Pinpoint any basic human values your company embodies- Perhaps your company is more spiritual focused or abstract. Identify what these are. 3. Note what it is about the way your company works that is different- What makes you stand out from your competition? Noting this difference will help show you your priorities and values. Constructing Your Message Once you have distinguished yourself and know clearly who you are it is time to select language. There are several linguistic considerations to weigh. The first is formal vs informal language. This will largely be denoted by your audience. Ask your team which will appeal more to your customers: “Here is an opportunity we would like to bring to your attention” or “Hey there is going to be a great sale coming up!”? The next is technical vs. simplified language. Depending on what kind of business you are and the education level of your base audience your vocabulary will need to accommodate their reading level. In addition, B2B and industrial organizations will need to deliver language that meets the technical knowledge of their target audience. Among the more subtle aspects of your voice is colloquial language. If you can make pop culture references and the vast majority of your audience will understand them, inserting some slang into your voice is an option. However if you have an older or more traditional audience you might want to stray away from these. This can be largely dependent on the geographic location of your audience. The final and most niche consideration is swearing. Rarely there are companies who can get away with swearing as part of their brand voice. Less extreme swear words such as “hell” or “damn” might seem insignificant to you but can still have an impact with your audience. If it is a significant part of your voice proceed with caution. Once you have developed a clear banding strategy craft your brand voice is an essential next step. A clear brand voice is a simple tool to help your consumers relate and better identify with you, improving your customer service, recognition, messaging, and revenue. web hosting Continue reading
